Lou Conter, the last known survivor of the USS Arizona battleship that sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor, has passed away at the age of 102. He died at his home in Grass Valley, California, due to congestive heart failure. Conter was a quartermaster on the Arizona during the attack in 1941 and survived alongside only 335 officers and crewmen, with 1,177 others perishing. After the attack, Conter served in three wars, flew in 200 missions as a pilot, and was shot down twice before retiring in 1967. He was planning a final trip to Hawaii in December but was too weak. The wreckage of the USS Arizona remains underwater, with more than 900 marines and sailors still entombed inside. Conter emphasized the importance of honoring the heroes who died in the attack, and only 19 survivors of Pearl Harbor are still alive today.
